12 juin 1955 - Canadian Federal Director of Immigration fights the entry of Black Caribbean domestics

Description:

"Anti-Blackness, articulated in the guise of benevolence, continued into immigration policy in the mid-twentieth century. In 1955, for example, the federal director of immigration (unsuccessfully) fought the entry of Black Caribbean domestics, stating that they would 'vegetate to a low standard of living' and that allowing their migration would be 'an act of misguided generosity since it would not have the effect of bringing about a worthwhile solution to the problem of coloured people and would quite likely intensify our own social and economic problems' (in Calliste 1993: 133)."
