Description:
First Queen of Carthage, Dido was the legendary founder of the city, having fled Tyre where her father reigned as king and where her brother had murdered her husband.
Her means of acquiring the city would become famous for a mathematical problem that bears her name. She was told she could buy as much land as could be covered by an ox hide. In response, she cut apart a hide into fine strips and placed them in a circle around a hill upon which she settled her people.
According to Virgil, who lived well after the destruction of Carthage, Aeneas the Trojan, a purported ancestor of the Romans, seduced and then left Dido, inspiring an eternal enmity between the two cities that led to the Punic Wars.
Within the older legend, Dido was being pressured into marrying a powerful neighbouring King but she, preferring to be faithful to her first husband,
