As an event of "Bleeding Kansas" Preston Brooks attacked Senator Charles Sumner with a walking cane, nearly to death, because of the speech he presented on anti- slavery. He attacked him on May 22, 1856 at the United States Chamber. This is significant because it is a specific act of violence within "Bleeding Kansas". It shows the extent that people will go to prove their ideology of slavery is correct.
