Description:

John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry was a attempt to state movements to free enslaved people. John Brown, an anti-slavery activist, led 17 other activist, including 5 blacks, to raid an arsenal ferry in Virginia, on the evening of October 16, 1859. His intention was for the weapons to be used by the slaves for an uprising. They were captured shortly after, being tried, then hung. It led the activist using open warfare. The raid is viewed as a prelude to the Civil War violence.
