-along with other political prisoners in amnesty - Batista believed it would be good publicity (1954 elections had been considered fraudulent as he was only candidate)

-censorship laws had been relaxed leading up to election, so Castro's supporters campaigned for his freedom

-Batista didn't think Castro was a threat

-soon fled to Mexico with brother (likely to be rearrested/assassinated due to popularity + unwillingness to repent for revolutionary actions)
