1 mars 1859 - Second war of Italian independence

Description:

Cavour provokes Austria by raising troops on the border and after refusing an ultimatum, Austria declares war. The Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia was successful in defeating the Austrians at the bloody battle of Solferino. Napoleon III now fearing a surprise attack by the Prussians and not wanting the Kingdom of Piedmont to become too powerful, withdrew his support and signed the treaty of Villafranca which stated that Austria would keep Venetia but they could give up control of Lombardy to the house of Savoy. Cavour later convinced Napoleon III to approve and help in Piedmont's ambition to take over Tuscany, Parma, Modena, Romagna, Marche, Umbria in exchange for Savoy and Nice.
