28 août 1917 - Conscription (-1)
Description:
The introduction of Conscription in 1917 caused major division among different cultures in Canada. Conscription required all men aged 20-45 to enlist in the army. By introducing conscription, the Canadian government made over 400,000 Canadian citizens required to go to war. This created a significant division between anglophones and francophones, as many anglophones were pro-conscription, and the majority of francophones were anti-conscription. The separation caused people to take to the streets to rally and advocate for their opinions to be heard. The negative effects of conscription outweighed many of the positive aspects as it created holes in the economy and a divisive atmosphere in society. In conclusion, conscription forced many Canadians to enlist in the military, creating divisions among communities, and causing a social decline in Canada.
