22 avr. 1915 - The Second Battle of Ypres (0)

Description:

The 2nd battle of Ypres marked one of the first major battles in Canada’s history. It created a sense of pride and nationalism amongst Canadians as it was a large victory for Canada over the German forces. The 8,000 Canadian soldiers in the war were able to defy the odds and hold off the incoming German fleet. This showed that Canada was a significant presence in the British military. In contrast, the battle resulted in the death of many Canadian soldiers. In addition, it was the first utilization of chemical gases in warfare, which caused the majority of the deaths. The introduction of chemical gases in warfare proved lethal in the coming battles. This caused neither progress nor decline in Canada, as the negative and positive elements balanced each other out.
