1529-1530 : oldest depiction of the instrument in "La Madonna degli aranci", San Cristoforo church, Vercelli, Italy (by Gaudenzio Ferrari)

1556 : oldest accurate and rigorous description of the instrument in "Epitomé musical des tons, sons et accordz, es voix humaines, fleustes d'Alleman, fleustes à neuf trous, violes, & violons" by Philibert Jambe de fer

1564-1567 : creation of the oldest existing violin, made by Andrea Amati for Charles IX of France. Andrea Amati is the italian liutaio responsible for the design of the modern violin.
