The final event that began the freefall of events in Europe that eventually led to WW2, was the Japanese invasion of all of China. The Japanese, hell bent on expanding their Asian empire invaded China and faced very little pushback from other powers. The democratic European powers were preoccupied with a growing German threat, the Americans verbally criticized the Japanese, and everyone else didn't care enough or have the ability to react. The Soviets sent some volunteers to support China but not much more. The dead League criticized the invasion and nothing more. This showed that no power was really willing to intervene in a conflict to save another unless it directly threatened them. This gave Germany yet another go ahead to push into central Europe and have little pushback. Of course they would bite off too much with Poland and begin the Second World War.
