4 avr. 2023 - 2023: ADL: Anti-zionism is anti-semitism. There are paradoxes among the prejudices.

Description:

[ == There is a striking paradox between the far-right, white supremacist/John Birch Society posture against Zionism, versus recent Christian nationalist preoccupations with supporting Israel's nationalist interests.

Anti-zionist writing from around the turn of the 20th century characterized Zionism, the Jewish people's quest for a homeland, as a wide conspiracy riddled with false anti-semitic tropes: greed, a conspiracy of bankers and shadowy interests, and the "blood libel" involving sacrifices and the blood of children.

These ideas continue to permeate anti-semitic and conspiratorial politics to the present.

But more recently, Christian nationalist groups (which often have ideological overlap and shared objectives with far-right, anti-semitic supremacy groups) have discovered in Israel what they believe to be a confirmation of Biblical writing in the establishment of the nation-state of Israel. As a result, Christian nationalists conflate ancient scriptural and propheti "Israel" with the modern nation-state. They view it as an obligation to support the nation of Israel in its political and military actions, progressively erasing the remnants of Palestinian territory from which modern Israel was carved out in 1948. However, this Christian nationalist support does not sit well with many Jews, for reasons seen in the following quote from the Jewish Virtual Library --rw ]

====
"Jews are also uncomfortable with Christian Zionists because most have few other common political interests besides their support for Israel. The majority of American Jews are politically and socially liberal. Christian Zionists are on the whole politically conservative Republicans who, for example, oppose abortion and gay marriage, and support prayer in public schools. Most Jews are particularly concerned over what they see as the Christian Right’s efforts to weaken the separation between church and state. The Anti-Defamation League’s director, Abe Foxman, has been particularly outspoken and has said that if the domestic agenda of the Christian Right ever materializes, it will turn American Jews into “second-class citizens in our own country.”

"Christian Zionists are also more conservative on Israel than many Jews. They favor Israel maintaining all of its settlements in the West Bank, and were opposed to the Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip. Some prominent Christian Zionists have been highly critical of Israeli government policy of giving over parts of Israel to the Palestinian people. Christian Zionists, like followers of the Israeli Right, believe that Israel should never cede any section of Israel to the Palestinians because Israel was given to the Jews by God. "

"...The propagation of antisemitic themes by individuals and organizations across the political spectrum has likely worsened..., as ideas once on the fringe have entered the mainstream; antisemites have become emboldened; and large swaths of the population have become less inclined to seriously examine perspectives different from their own.

To be sure, one can harshly criticize Israel’s leaders and actions without being antisemitic. But accusing “Zionists,” or anyone who supports the existence of the State of Israel, of behavior commonly associated with age-old tropes about Jews (such as greed, bloodthirstiness and power) is antisemitic. Additionally, this rhetoric villainizes the vast majority of Jews around the world who identify with Zionism or feel a connection or kinship with Israel (regardless of their individual views on Israeli policies).

Such language also has an immensely negative impact on the quest to promote understanding, engagement and, ultimately, a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In addition to fanning the flames of violence, injecting bigotry and antisemitic conspiracy theories into the discourse on the conflict erodes the trust necessary to reach a negotiated agreement.

Several antisemitic themes percolate in some anti-Israel spaces, including: Zionists are disloyal to the United States; Zionists control the media; Zionists control the government; Zionists or Israel perpetrated 9/11; Zionists are ideologically akin to Nazis and collaborated with them on the extermination of European Jewry; Zionism and Zionists cannot be authentically Jewish; Zionists are greedy; and Zionists are bloodthirsty."
