Started to develop under Pallava ruler.
MAHENDRAVARMAN STAGE:
1) Existing rock = cut into chambers & decorated with carvings from inside.
2) Initial structure = Mandap
ex Mandap at Mammandur, TN (1st)
NARSIMHAVARMAN STAGE:
1) Existing rock = Chiseled out from outside to give proper architectural shape
2) Initial structure = Rath
ex Pancha Rath of Mahabalipuram (2nd)
Dharmaraja Rath >>>>>> Draupadi Rath
RAJSIMHAVARMAN STAGE:
1) NO rock-cut architecture.
2) Creation of inclining pyramidal tower known as Vimana.
3) Precurssor of Dravida style of architecture
ex. Kailashnath Temple, Kanchi (3rd)
Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram
NANDIVARMAN STAGE:
1) Led to popularization of Dravida style in south India
ex Vaikunthaperumal Temple, Kanchipuram
