NATO was a North Atlantic Treaty Organization whose goal is to provide security against Soviet Union at the time. The founding members of Nato are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
