1 janv. 336 av. J.-C. - Meets
Diogenes
Description:
Alexander the Great met Diogenes the Cynic in Corinth in 336 BC. Diogenes was a philosopher who lived in a barrel and was known for his simple lifestyle and his outspoken views. Alexander was impressed by Diogenes's philosophy, and the two men had a brief conversation.
Here is a brief account of the meeting, as told by Plutarch:
"When Alexander came to Corinth, he was eager to see Diogenes, and he sent some of his friends to bring him to him. Diogenes was sunning himself in the marketplace, and when he saw the men coming, he asked them if they were looking for a lost dog. When they told him that they were sent by Alexander, he got up and followed them.
Alexander was surprised to see that Diogenes was dressed in rags and lived in a barrel. He asked Diogenes if there was anything he could do for him. Diogenes replied, 'Yes, stand out of my sunlight.'"
This meeting is often seen as a symbol of the contrast between Alexander's power and Diogenes's simple lifestyle. However, it is also seen as a meeting of two great minds, and it is said that Alexander was deeply impressed by Diogenes's philosophy.
