Onesimus was a slave of Philemon who was converted to the faith by Paul (see Philemon 8-21). According to Ignatius of Antioch, Onesimus was "a man of inexpressible love" who was appointed as bishop of the church in Ephesus by Timothy.Onesimus is traditionally believed to have been stoned to death during the reign of Trajan, though some accounts say he was beheaded.
