ZippityZooDoo Conservation Community (CEL).

Summary: This project proposes to utilize the Cleveland Zoological Society’s ZippityZooDoo charity event to raise donations for AWF in order to support and create anti-poaching patrols to protect endangered carnivores. The project, titled ZippityZooDoo Conservation Connection, would utilize the annual event’s silent auction to fund the patrols. During the ZippityZooDoo event, donors will learn about African carnivore conservation, AWF as an organization, and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s new focus, Future for Wildlife. Utilizing ZippityZooDoo to create a connection between AWF, CMZ, and the Cleveland Zoological Society provides ample opportunity to tap into unused markets for fundraising for this important conservation cause, and has a high chance of successfully gathering donations due to the experience brought to the program by each group. The proposed project fits into my MP well as it attempts to create a stronger program for the care of endangered big cats kept in reservations. While these animals do not typically receive the direct husbandry care of humans such as in a zoo setting, they are still being kept within these parks. They may receive medical attention, protection from poachers and visitors to the parks, and increased contact with humans than purely wild species outside of reservation. By binging together CMZ and AWF over the protection of these species, this proposal demonstrates the effects of animals in captivity on the conservation of species in the wild. This project has a large community engagement portion; not only engaging the Cleveland Zoo Society’s community, but the local Cleveland community, CMZ’s community, and members of the AWF community and their teams on the ground. It was also meant to increase local understanding of an international issue.
