The focal point of the Byzantine reconquest of the island of Crete from the Muslim Arabs, the siege of Chandax (Heraklion) was led by general and future emperor Nikephoros II Phokas. The siege resulted in the reconquest of Crete and a major victory for the Byzantines, who were able to reestablish their influence over the Aegean as a result.
