9 déc. 1968 - O'Neil's Crossroads speech

Description:

This speech was broadcasted on television and was made in hopes of addressing the dangerous situation NI is in. It was made to appeal to the NIRCA leaders to avoid chaos. In the short term, the speech seemed to work as NIRCA marches were called off. However O'Neill did face oppositions. William Craig, the Minister of Home Affairs, criticised O'Neill for the speech saying it was doing what the London government told him to do. Many unions opposed the Five Point Reform Programme. They believed O'Neill made the appeal because of the threat of violence and felt that the reforms would weaken NI.
