On September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda coordinated several terrorist attacks by hijacking planes. These attacks resulted in the deaths of approximately 3,000 people, and led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. Arguably more importantly, the U.S. then became increasingly involved in the middle east over the next two decades, pursuing Osama bin Laden and attempting to overthrow the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.Sources:
