Description:
A nationwide revolt against the government of the Hungarian People's Republic and its Soviet-imposed policies
-initially began as a student protest, but after a student was shot by the state security police (AVH), the revolution began
-revolt quickly spread and the government collapsed
-political leaders, pro-soviets, and the AVH troops were often killed or imprisoned
-people demanded political changes, a withdrawl from warsaw pact, and wanted to re-establish free elections
-later Soviet forces decided to crush the revolution and invaded
-the soviet forces were victorious and ended up suppressing all public opposition
