1 janv. 1822 - Colonization of Liberia
Description:
Although not widely known in American history, the United States did colonize Africa in the early 19th century. The American government subsidized free black people to colonize the west coast of Africa, specifically the territories in Liberia. They held on to the provincial territories in west Africa from 1822-1847. In 1857, Liberia had merged into one nation with the rest of the American colonies in Africa. In a report form 1854 by Rev. John McKay, he writes about the colony upon his visit "I had expected to see a respectable town in Monrovia, as it is the capital of the Republic ; but my expectations were more than realized, for I found it making just pretentions to the character and position of a commercial city" (McKay, 6) the remark of the settlement as a "commercial city" tells us that American's viewed US overseas colonies as nothing more than profit.
