Open for 6 months (closing on 14 Oct 1886), attracting 5.5 million visitors. Held in South Kensington in a collection of purpose-built Indian-style buildings. Objective (according to then Prince of Wales, Edward VII): to "stimulate commerce and strengthen the bonds of union now existing in every portion of her Majesty's Empire".
