The battle of Okinawa was one of the last important battles of WWII and one of the bloodiest. On April 1, (Easter Sunday) the U.S. invaded the Japanese-held Island of Okinawa, it was their last spot before mainland Japan. As the 150,000 American soldiers were taking the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, the war in Europe was coming to an end. The Soviet Union was taking the remaining Nazi territories. Right when the U.S. landed they faced no resistance by the Japanese, but as more men came onto the beach they experienced heavy resistance. The bombardment was thought to have wiped out most of their defenses, for the reason of no resistance but this was wrong. After eighty-two days of fighting on Okinawa, the Island was under Allied control. This battle was one of the bloodiest wars in the Pacific. Allied casualties were 4900 men, and another 4,800 were wounded.
