1 mars 1780 - The First State Abolishes Slavery

Description:

On March 1, 1780 Pennsylvania would do something unheard of in the time, and became the first american state to officially abolish slavery. This act was known as the “An Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery”. Instead of making it immediately illegal, the government chose to do a gradual emancipation of enslaved people, to appease slave owners in the state. This made few slaves free immediately, and some steadfast pro-slavery citizens of Pennsylvania continued to buy slaves from Maryland and Delaware. This act, albeit very slowly, made Pennsylvania a state with no slaves in it. This one act by one state set in motion the events of the civil rights movement, the freedom of slaves in the United States, and the outlawing of segregation, and without this act, segregation might still be a major problem in our society today, and slavery might not have even been officially abolished yet.
