Description:
A U.S. Supreme Court Case which ruled the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 overruled a Pennsylvania law which banned African Americans from being removed from the state into slavery.
Cause: Fugitives would run north to escape slavery, causing northern sympathizing states to pass laws keeping slave hunters from taking them back to their southern owners.
Effect: Court ruled that the laws were unconstitutional because the slaves were property.
