26 sept. 1983 - Nuclear Glitch of 1983

Description:

This was a computer glitch caused by bad location and bad timing. At this time, the Soviets were terrified of a nuclear attack and kept putting more and more money into their military. Both countries feared the possibility of a miscalculation that would lead to a nuclear war because everyone was just so on edge. The Soviet's early warning missile detection system alarms went off, warning that the United States had officially launched a nuclear attack. This wasn't true, but the sun, American satellites, and clouds had aligned in such a way that the computer couldn't tell the difference and was triggered. The only reason a war didn't happen is because the man in charge of the system decided to shut off the alarm and say that it was a computer error.
