Description:

This was an important step in the creation of the Lutheran church, which criticized the excesses of Catholicism. Luther particularly objected to the sale of indulgences to finance the construction of st. peters basilica. He saw it as immoral and unchristian to promise entrance to heaven as something that could be bought. The protestant reformation was assisted greatly by the printing press, as it enabled Luther's ideas to spread widely throughout Europe.
