On May 20th, 2013, an EF-5 tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma sometime in the afternoon. The tornado formed just before 3 p.m. The tornado was on the ground for 39 minutes. Moore is located in tornado alley. Oklahoma is known for having the worst tornados. This tornado was an EF5 wedge tornado. It killed 24 people and injured 212 others. This tornado caused 2 billion dollars worth of damage. It also destroyed two schools and 300 houses.

In order for a tornado to be classified as an EF4 or EF5 tornado it has to reach wind speeds of 166 to 200 mph or more. EF0 and EF1 tornados are categorized as weak. EF2 and EF3 are categorized as strong. EF4 and EF5 are categorized as violent. Only about 0.06% of all tornadoes are classified as EF5. There have only been 67 EF5-rated tornados worldwide. 59 of those were in the U.S.
