1 juin 1863 - Battle of Gettysburg Fought in Pennsilvania

Description:

The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the American Civil War. This is due to Robert E. Lee’s second plan to invade the North coming to a swift end. The loss in Gettysburg dashed any plans of the Confederacy becoming an independent nation. In context, General Robert E. Lee wanted to force negotiations to end the fighting by attacking north of The Mason Dixon Line (the line that marked the border of Pennsylvania and Maryland). On July 1st, 1863, the three-day battle began as the Confederate soldiers tried to get supplies in Gettysburg. The Union had caught them by surprise and was led by George G. Meade and had 93,921 forces engaged. The Confederacy was led by Robert E. Lee and had 71,699 forces engaged. The battle was fought hard, and on the third day, Lee commanded Brig. Gen. George E. Picket to advance his division, which was half of the attacking force in this battle. This was a daring move proven to be disastrous, as this attack put the Confederacy at 60% of the casualties in the battle. After this push, Lee retreated suffering 28,064 casualties. If the Union was successful in pursuing the retreating wagon of wounded soldiers, the Confederacy would have been forced to surrender. Instead, the war raged on for two more years.
