6 nov 1860 - Abraham Lincoln Is Elected President

Description:

In the U.S. presidential election of 1860, the Constitutional Union's candidate was John Bell. The Republican candidate in the 1960s election was the victor Abraham Lincoln. the Southern Democratic candidate John C. Breckinridge and Northern Democratic Stephen A. Douglas. With the separation of Northern and Southern Democrats, there was a clear split in votes. Because of the result of the Dred Scott Decision, the Missouri Compromise was voided by the Supreme Court, therefore making slavery legal in all states at the time. After a couple of conventions, the Democratic Party decided to put two candidates in the run for the presidency. The newly founded Republican Party made Abraham Lincoln their candidate. The goal of this new party was to stop the extension of slavery. The last and certainly least party (if we recognize the Democrats as one party) in this election was the Constitutional Union with candidate John Bell. As the name implies, the Constitutional Union did not want to worry about the slavery issue but instead focused on being loyal to the Constitution. In the end, Lincoln won the election with 180 electoral votes, Breckenridge came in second with 72 electoral votes, John Bell came second to last with 39 electoral votes, and Stephen A. Douglas came in last with 12 electoral votes.
