Description:

The Hubble space telescope was the first mission launched for the great observatories mission. It was supposed to be launched in the 80s but the Challenger disaster set it back to a later day. The Hubble space telescope was the first space telescope designed to be visited by astronauts and have repairs performed. It has received many updates so that it can see black holes, planets and stars and other astronomical features. The Hubble space telescope's communication pipeline goes through the tracking and data relay satellite, then down to the ground in White Sands, New Mexico, and then to the NASA Goddard space flight center. Other missions in the Great Observatories included: the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory which was launched in April 1991 and reentered the atmosphere June 2000 which used TDRS, Chandra X-ray Observatory which launched July 1999 which uses the DSN, and Spitzer Space Telescope which was launched in August 2003 which uses the DSN.
