This was caused by:
1. Televisions became the chief source of entertainment for millions of Americans. TVs were dominated by few networks, meaning that millions watched the same few networks and developed a common language and cultural norms.
2. Advertising became more aggressive, using more emotional appeals. There was a huge boom in consumer spending, w/ the aid of the creation of credit cards. Soon millions of people are buying the same stuff.
There was some opposition to the mass culture; J.D. Salinger = catcher in the rye. Beat poets.
