The (mainly protestant) idea that serving the poor will get you salvation (and into heaven) becomes popular.

The popularity of the YMCA and Salvation Army increases.

YMCA: community center like buildings in poor areas. Often had pools. Goal was to create healthy activities for the poor. Basketball was invented by YMCA. They would teach life classes for free or low costs.

Salvation Army: low-cost or free childcare so parents could work.
