1 janv. 1890 - Tobacco Protest

Description:

The Shah of the Qajar Dynasty granted a British company a monopoly over all the tobacco for Iran. Tobacco was very popular in Iran, so having the ability to control their market was very important to the Iranian people. Men, women, intellectuals, and religious authorities (Religious authorities were concerned that foreign influence would hurt Shi'i Islam.) all supported the boycott of tobacco. 22 days later, the concession was rescinded.
