1839 Egyptians defeat the Ottoman Turks at the battle of Nisibin, near the Turkish-Syrian border.1840 Europe's four big powers, including Britain, force Egypt to relinquish control over Syria. Britain occupies the port of Aden (in south Yemen) to protect itself from the Egyptians.
