Carpetbaggers: refers to Northerners who moved South after the war to try to help w/ rebuilding (although many southerns felt Carpetbaggers moved South to make a profit). The term meant "outsiders" and "not to be trusted."
Scalawags: refers to southerners who joined the repub party after the war. Southern democrats viewed them as traitors.
These nicknames illustrate how dividing and tense politics were.
