10 févr. 1670 - The Screat Dover Plot
Description:
The Secret Dover Plot was a conspiracy to bring England back under Catholic rule that was allegedly hatched between King Charles II of England and Louis XIV of France in 1670. The plot was named after the town of Dover, where the initial discussions took place in secret.
The plan involved Charles II converting to Catholicism and securing the support of France to re-establish Catholicism in England. In exchange, Charles promised to end English support for the Dutch Republic and to assist France in its military campaigns.
The plot was discovered in 1674 when one of the conspirators, Edward Coleman, was arrested for his involvement in another conspiracy
The Dover Plot fueled anti-Catholic sentiment in England and led to increased suspicion of Charles II and his policies.
