29 août 1861 - North vs South
Description:
North advantages:
1. Stronger economy, could produce more weapons
2. Had 3/4 of the nation's Railroads; they could load armies onto trains (faster and less tiring).
3. Superior navy; could block southern ports.
4. All metal works were in the North
5. Had a larger population; 22M to 9M (3.5M out of the South's 9M were slaves).
6. Had the Anaconda Plan; the Union planned to have the navy block the 3 bodies of water (Atlantic, Gulf, & MS River) that surrounded the south. The Union's army would then march south to finish things.
South Advantages:
1. Better commanders: Lee and Jackson,
2. Could fight defensively.
South Advantages that are debatable:
1. The south was fighting to defend their homeland; some thought it would make them fight harder?
2. Farm Culture; some southerners thought that because they were farmers who could hunt and ride horses, they were raised to fight and would totally crush those weak northerners...
3. King Cotton: the South thought they could use cotton to convince Euro nations to ally w/ them. They couldn't. Euro countries already had a surplus of cotton and the north would seize southern cotton and sell it at very low prices.
