Description:

This tariff raised the cost of living in the South and South Carolina threatened to secede because of it.
In the 1830s, Southern states started talking about nullification- the idea that states can nullify federal laws. This pisses Jackson off and he threatens to send troops. Clay makes a compromise; the tariffs will be lowered but there can be no nullifying.
