4 avr. 1798 - Alien and Sedition Acts

Description:

Series of laws passed amid widespread fear that a foreign war against France was imminent. They gave the president power to deport/jail suspicious aliens (foreigners). Adams did this to get rid of people who were against him (mostly foreigners).

They restricted the activities of foreign residents in the country and limited freedom of speech and of the press, particularly when it was critical of the president or the government (the gov could jail or fine critics). They were mostly set to expire in 1801 so that they didn't backfire on Adams.

Point: During wartime, civil liberties are compromised.
