Description:

In 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which permitted the exclusion of individuals from designated military area and allowed for the removal and internment of Japanese residents living in the Salinas Valley. The Salinas Rodeo Grounds which is now a current hub for cowboy culture was converted to the Salinas Assembly Center and became a place of detention for 3,586 Japanese Americans from Monterey, Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy before they were transferred to internment camps elsewhere. The majority of those held at the Salinas Assembly Center were sent to the Poston internment camp in Arizona.
