In 1981, Reagan was almost killed by John Hinckley Jr. Hinckley had gone up to Reagan and shot him with exploding bullets. His attempt was a failure and the bullet never exploded. His surviving of the shooting made his popularity go up. This gave him more supporrt in order to lead the country.
