Students at Kent University began anti-war protests and rallies on campus. It soon became violent when the students threw bottles at police cars and broke store windows. The police showed up and warned them. This did not stop them. The night before the shooting happened, the students had set fire to a university building. This got the National Guard's attention. On May 4, the police open fired, killing 4 students and injuring 9.
