1 janv. 1825 - Isambard Brunel starts building a tunnel under the Thames River

Description:

In 1825, Isambard Brunel began construction of a huge tunnel under the River Thames that took almost 20 years to complete, once it opened in 1843, the Thames tunnel was a massive underwater passage that could be walked through. It connected Rotherhithe and Wapping. This was the first underwater tunnel ever created. It was designed by Marc Brunel, Isambard’s father, using a revolutionary invention of tunnel shielding. Isambard was almost killed in a flood during construction of the tunnel, and construction was halted at one point for seven years, resuming again afterwards. Over a million-people passed through the finished long-awaited tunnel in the first few months.
