Less than one year after her own escape to PA from a Maryland plantation (recorded as Sept. 17, 1849), Harriet Tubman guided her first group of escaped slaves working as a part of the Underground Railroad. By the end of her first year (Sept 1850) she had become the first woman "Conductor," a position in the Underground Railroad which included the knowledge of all routes to the free territory. She made her last of her recorded 19 rescue trips, from MD to Canada, in 1960, and has been credited with freeing over 300 people.
