• First African-American author of a published book of poetry
• Kidnapped and enslaved by Wheatley family of Boston

• 1773: a trip to London met with patrons which enabled the
publication of her Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and
Moral (Sept. 1, 1773)
• Highly praised by George Washington and Jupiter Hammon
• Emancipated by the Wheatley family after the publication of
her book
• Style of writing: absence of Wheatley’s identity as a black enslaved person (cf. Uncle Tom
syndrome (coping skill/survival technique in which individuals use
passivity and submissiveness to conceal their true feelings; During slavery,
African Americans used this strategy to avoid retaliation and for self-preservation)
