1 janv. 1894 - Dreyfus Affair
Description:
In 1894, Jewish military captain Alfred Dreyfus was falsely accused by the French army of treason and was sentenced to life in prison. However, in 1896, the head of counter-espionage found a French Army major, Esterhazy, to be guilty. When the army dropped the charges against Esterhazy and laid additional charges on Dreyfus (originating from forged documents), the public started a movement pressuring the government to reopen his case. When he returned to Paris for another trial in 1899, though, it was revealed that many anti-Semites were actually against him, associating him with the larger class of Jews. This reveals how, even in the country that first accepted Jews, there were still people who hated them with a passion. In the end, however, the effects didn't end up being large, as Dreyfus was restored to his original rank at the end of the trials, and he was allowed to live his life again.
