1 janv. 1742 - Countess Benigna von Zinzendorf
Description:
At the age of 16, Countess Benigna von Zinzendorf, with support from her father, opened the first all-girls school in the American Colonies, the Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies - where girls had virtually the same curriculum as the boys - to serve the Moravian community in and near Bethlehem. It became known as Bethlehem Female Seminary in 1749 which, in 1785, opened to students outside of the Moravian community when it became a boarding school. In 1863 it was chartered by the state of Pennsylvania to grant baccalaureate degrees and in 1913 reorganized as Moravian Seminary and College for Women, which merged with the men's college in 1954 to form Moravian College.
