On October 12th, 1492, Christopher Columbus' expedition first landed on Guanahaní (christened "San Salvador" by Columbus) in the present-day Bahamas, commencing European colonization of the Americas. Portuguese, English, French, and Dutch expeditions soon followed.The colonization of the Americas ushered in the age of transatlantic trade/ the "Columbian Exchange", with trade networks emerging between the "Old" and "New World".
