In 1649, the Rump Parliament voted to abolish the monarchy and the House of Lords, declaring England a republic or "Commonwealth." This decision was largely influenced by the Puritan and republican factions within Parliament, who believed that the monarchy was an outdated and corrupt institution that had outlived its usefulness. The vote to abolish the monarchy was passed by a narrow margin, with 135 in favor and 128 against.

Following this decision, King Charles I was put on trial and eventually executed in January 1649. The abolition of the monarchy marked a significant shift in English political history, as it ended centuries
